Magnolia Hill Camp
Artist teachers + imaginative classes = creative kids

Magnolia Hill Summer Camps are designed to provide academic enrichment, while introducing children to the visual and performing arts. Children need to have opportunities for artistic expression.. Fine art, music and dance stimulate the hearts and minds of children. We set the stage for a lifelong appreciation of the arts.

The structure of our day will consist of periods of creative movement and visual art. These periods will include music, poetry, stories, and dance. Coordination and motor skills will be strengthened. The day will include a Bright Child Masterpieces class related to the camp theme. BCM classes present art history to children in an exciting and innovative way. This class introduces children to the works of famous artists like Van Gogh, Monet, Michelangelo and others. Along with viewing fine art and learning about artists we will do a related art project. BCM is a class that really works! It is fun! Your child will have the opportunity to view art from many periods of art history. Our themes have been carefully selected according to the interests of children, as well as for the educational significance of the topics. We pack a lot of learning into our camp day.

The environment at Magnolia Hill studios is supportive and encouraging. All classes are offered in a non-competitive way and with an imaginative spirit that encourages the heart of a young child. “Recent research documents that the arts stimulate learning, improve overall academic performance, promote teamwork, and help children develop problem solving skills.” According to Susan Striker, author of the Anti-coloring Book, there is a link between art instruction and the development of reading and writing. Our classes are rich in multi-sensory experiences. They are rich in literature. We believe that strengthening cognitive, social, and emotional skills is just as important as developing strong, flexible, and healthy bodies.

Camp Descriptions

Rock Stars: Calling All Geologists!
Calling all geologists. Become a "rock star" at MHS. Rocks, crystals, volcanoes, lava, and clay. Create a volcano. Learn about dirt! Campers will learn about different aspects of geology and how to start a rock collection. We will classify rocks, study the earth, and take a look at fossils. We’ll make a mud pile mountain and a mud pie. We’ll eat some edible rocks. How about some stone soup? Maybe we’ll make an earthquake, too! If you are fascinated by the earth and what it’s made of, then this is the camp for you!

It's a Bugs Life
This program is for children who are interested in learning about entomology- the study of insects! If you like creepy crawlers, this is the camp for you! This is a weeklong camp devoted to exploring the world of insects and invertebrates. Bring your boots and prepare to get a little dirty as we guide campers through a series of hand-on activities such as bug hunting, experiments, pond studies, games, and crafts. Come explore the garden in search of insects and check out our butterfly garden.

Dancing Princesses
Our princess ballet camp is for girls, ages 3—12, who love being girls! Campers will twirl into beautiful ballerina princesses with arts ‘n crafts, enchanting ballet stories, costumes, ballet rehearsals, and so much more. Every moment will be filled with wonderful games, art, music, and creative fairytale enchantment! We will meet real ballerinas, too! Every day the campers will have the opportunity to be a different princess: Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Belle, Jasmine, Cinderella, and Ariel.

Project Renaissance Faire
Welcome lords and ladies to the days of the Renaissance. Come, step back to a time of great change in art, architecture, science, medicine, and in all areas of creativity and thought. Enter a world where knights, dragons and fairies play. It is a world where people take pride in their craft and trade. Our exploration of the dramatic artwork, artists and rich history of the Renaissance will include a series of projects which will give the students a better understanding of the times. No experience in art is required, but please bring to this class the desire to learn about the art of the Renaissance. Some of the artists that will be included in this class are Fra Angelico, da Vinci, Durer, Michelangelo, and Raphael.

Once Upon a Musical
Roll out the red carpet. Turn on the stage lights. This show stopping camp features all the best Broadway songs! Each day, a different Broadway musical sets the stage for this energetic and unique camp experience. Performers will enjoy daily classes in dance and creative movement. They will also explore musical theater through stories and cool art projects. We weave entertaining and educational activities into every Broadway story and song. Activities enhance language and motor skills. Wouldn’t you like your child to be just as familiar with Cats, Annie, Hair, and The King and I, as he is with the Lion King, Peter Pan and Mary Poppins?

Through the Garden With Claude Monet
Take a trip to France as we visit Claude Monet! This camp will explore famous art masterpieces through hands-on activities. Campers will be immersed in the world of Claude Monet, as we study his beautiful paintings and his famous gardens. We will study approximately twelve art masterpieces. The camper will have the opportunity to work with pastels, watercolor, tempera, etc., learn a little French, listen to great children’s literature, and spend some time in Linnea’s garden (Linnea in Monet’s Garden) doing gardening projects. Nature walks, classical music and fun movement classes will round out our day

Discovering Ireland
Come out and explore the land of the green. Hear some Irish tales, learn step dancing, listen to beautiful Irish music, and learn about the culture of this enchanting country. We’ll explore traditions and folklore, geography and art. Find out about shamrocks. Search for the pot of gold. What is a bodhran or a biddle? Make a clay pot. Do you like potatoes? The land of the green is waiting for you.

SHIPWRECKED! Island Adventures!
Splash!! Aye Mate!! Come along with us for adventures under the sea and on tropical islands. Have fun with the magic of creative movement and your favorite music from The Little Mermaid, Pirates of the Caribbean and Peter Pan. Explore the depths of the ocean, take a close up look at sea creatures, learn some fishy moves, beat a drum or do the hula, go on a pirate adventure and hunt for treasure. Enjoy tropical themed art projects. Every day will include the best of children’s literature as related to our theme. There will be dance, art lessons, and art history. Learn about Monet, Van Gogh and Georgia O’Keefe. We will end the week with a “mini” luau performance where parents will watch their hula girls and pirates perform.
